Meet the Oscar® Nominees - Part 1

In the days leading up to DocuDay LA and DocuDays NY, we at IDA will be introducing--and in some cases, re-introducing--our community to the filmmakers whose work has been nominated for an Academy Award for either Best Documentary Feature or Best Documentary Short Subject. As we did in conjunction with last summer's DocuWeek™ Theatrical Documentary Showcase, we have asked the filmmakers to share the stories behind their films--the inspirations, the challenges and obstacles, the goals and objectives, the reactions to their films so far, and the impact of an Academy Award nomination.

DocuDay Los Angeles 2011

Ivy Film Festsival

Hello!

My name is Katherine Butera and I am on this year's publicity staff for the Ivy Film Festival. The final submission deadline for the festival is only days away! You can submit your films for the final deadline on February 22nd, 2011. We want to reach as broad an audience of student filmmakers and screenwriters as possible. If you know of any students in a class, department, or student group that might be interested in submitting their work, we would appreciate it if you could forward them this email, or let us know the best way to contact them so we can spread the word.

The Ivy Film Festival is the world’s largest student-run film festival and is a great venue for student filmmakers and screenwriters to show their work. The 2011 Ivy Film Festival will take place from April 18th through the 24th, at Brown University in Providence, Rhode Island. We are currently open for submissions from all university-level filmmakers.

Just a little bit about us: The Ivy Film Festival started in 2001 as a place for undergraduate and graduate filmmakers to share their work, and interact with other student filmmakers as well as established figures in the film industry. We present selected films and screenplays to a wide audience, and a panel of celebrity judges (including directors, producers, writers, and agents) views the best selections from the festival.

During the festival we will screen the winning films and host readings of the screenplay finalists’ work. All finalists will be notified and invited as VIP guests to the festival. We will provide them with housing, meals, tickets to film screenings, and passes to special networking events, panels, and parties. New this year, the Screenplay Staff will work with the finalists to produce 30-second clips of finalist screenplays to be showcased during the Awards Ceremony.

Here are the details about submitting materials to the festival:

Please submit films (short or feature length) to the 2011 Ivy Film Festival online at www.withoutabox.com or through the mail(visit www.ivyfilmfestival.com for more details). Details are as follows:

Final deadline: February 22nd, 2011

First film or screenplay submission - $45

Additional submissions - $20

If there are any questions, feel free to email us at iffpublicity2011@gmail.com or visit our website at www.ivyfilmfestival.com. Thank you so much for your help!

Sincerely,

Katherine Butera

THE DESERT OF
FORBIDDEN ART

A film by Amanda Pope & Tchavdar Georgiev

Risking being denounced as an 'enemy of the people,' Igor Savitsky rescues 40,000 forbidden fellow artists' works and creates in a far desert of Soviet Uzbekistan a museum now worth millions. Described as one of the most remarkable collections of 20th century Russian art by the NY Times and located in one of the worlds poorest regions, today the collection remains as endangered as when Savitsky first created it. Ben Kingsley, Sally Field and Ed Asner voice the diaries and letters of Savitsky and the artists. Intercut with recollections of the artists’ children and rare archival footage, the film takes us on a dramatic journey of sacrifice for the sake of creative freedom

MLK Day of Service Video

Occidental College MLK Day of Service 2011

http://vimeo.com/19874731

"On January 22, 2011 Occidental College students, faculty, and staff joined together to recognize Martin Luther King Day through participation in the MLK Day of Service Challenge, collaborating with a wide range of community partners on service projects ranging from painting and gardening to archival organization and neighborhood beautification.

Students from the Occidental Film & Media Studies Program took on a challenge of their own--documenting the day's activities and editing together this short video in time for screening at the day's closing ceremonies.

Many of the organizations have standing partnerships with Occidental throughout the year, underscoring that service is not a one-day venture, but a mode of daily citizenship and existence. For more information on this year's MLK Day of Service at Occidental or to find out how to get involved any day of the year, contact Occidental's Assistant Dean for Civic Engagement Ella Turenne (turenne@oxy.edu) or visit http://www.oxy.edu/x9266.xml"
