JACCC and Nissan Presents The Power of Community Video Contest

LOS ANGELES— The Japanese American Cultural and Community Center, together with Nissan, presents a video contest aimed at providing an opportunity for young Asian American filmmakers and artists to creatively express the importance of community through a short video, with a chance to win $1,000 in cash prize.

The contest’s mission is to explore the role of community in strengthening one’s ties to culture, family, and physical space. It also aims to serve as a platform to educate the greater Asian American community about cultural preservation and the impact that a unified, strong community can make.

Entrants are asked to submit a 60-second video that visually and creatively completes the phrase “The power of community is…” Videos may be in any genre, including but not limited to narrative, documentary, and experimental films. The entries will be judged based on overall message, creativity, and how well it conveys the ideals of the mission statement.

The 1st place video will receive a $1,000 cash prize, and will be shown in Little Tokyo, Los Angeles, as part of JACCC’s outdoor summer screening series in 2011. The 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place videos will also be streamed on the web.

“We hope that this video contest will encourage Asian American filmmakers to use their skills and creativity to serve and represent their local communities,” says cinematographer Tad Nakamura, known for his documentary trilogy of early Asian American Movement, Yellow Brotherhood (2003), Pilgrimage (2007), and A Song for Ourselves (2009). “There are so many artists that continue to be supported, inspired, and shared by their communities. This is a chance for them to express that relationship through video.” The contest will accept entries until January 31, 2011, and is open to anyone, regardless of their filmmaking experience.

For more information about the contest visit www.jaccc.org  or contact powerofcommunityvideocontest@gmail.com

Tad Nakamura. Nakamura’s trilogy of Asian American Movement has received critical acclaim, and has garnered awards at many festivals. He recently completed the final film in his trilogy, A Song for Ourselves, which is currently screening around the US and Canada. The film has won twelve awards. With this film, Nakamura completes his homage to the early Asian American Movement, and hopes to inspire the new generation of his community.
