Joan Rater: Writing for TV and Movies 11/18 at 4:30 in Fowler 309

Joan Rater is an Executive Producer/Writer of ABC's hit medical drama Grey's Anatomy, along with her husband/co-writer, Tony Phelan. Joan Began her career as an actress creating solo performances that developed a following in New York, playing at such venues as West Bank Cafe, La Mama, and The New Jersey Shakespeare Festival. Joan made the switch from acting to writing by collaborating on plays with her husband Tony. The adaptation of Jane Smiley's "Good Will," which the New York Times called "heartfelt and thought provoking," enjoyed a successful Off-Broadway run at The Director's Company in 1998. In Los Angeles, the duo first staffed under Shaun Cassidy in Cover Me for the USA Network. They then worked for Glenn Gordon Caron on the Paramount/FBC series Fling. Other credits include The Court, Push, Nevada; 10-8; MD's: Threat Matrix; and Law and Order: Trial by Jury. As well as writing television, the pair has optioned and is adapting a novel, Cast of Shadows, for film. Rater also writes and performs short pieces about being a parents, one of which, "The Long Hug," was published in a collection called Afterbirth, Stories You Won't Read in a Parenting Magazine. Joan lives in Pasadena with Tony and her two daughters.
