SMBRC Environmental Film Contest

The Santa Monica Bay Restoration Commission (SMBRC) is pleased to announce a request for short film submissions for the SMBRC’s First Environmental Film Contest (non-theatrical distribution).  The SMBRC invites undergraduate students in the Los Angeles area to submit a short film to compliment the SMBRC’s environmental mission to protect and restore native habitats throughout the Santa Monica Bay watersheds.
The SMBRC invites you to submit a short film not to exceed 5 minutes in length.  Documentary, docu-drama, narrative, historical, humor and experimental works are welcome.  Your film must pertain to wetlands in the southern California region.  Though it does not have to concern the Ballona Wetlands directly, we encourage local information and research to be included in each film’s content.

Films must be submitted by current undergraduate students.
Films completed before September 1st, 2010 will not be accepted.
Films must not have been broadcast on the internet prior to the final submittal date.
Films must have a running time of 5 minutes or less.

All entries will be evaluated by a combination of environmental and film professionals based on the
film’s relevancy to the topic, and the skill and originality with which the film was produced.

Three winning entries will be selected from the participants to be showcased at the Ballona Wetlands
Symposium in December, displayed on our website,, and shown on
several additional websites. Participants in the symposium will include scientists, local politicians,
media entities and citizen stakeholders. Winners will also be announced in newsletter articles, local
meetings and through separate media entities.

A gift certificate from Samy’s Camera will be also awarded to the first place winner, in addition to
prizes and gift baskets donated from other organizations (Starbucks, Panera Bread, etc).
